ABOUT DEANNA BEALS

Deanna Beals (also known as "DJ"), like so many others, was born with an innate passion for horses. She grew up in Lake Tahoe, California in a small ski resort town. While her family did not have any horses, she spent every moment she could around them; reading books about them, observing them, and going to summer horseback riding camps.

Deanna joined the work force at the age of 13, and in the summer when the snow melted from the mountains of Lake Tahoe, she worked at nearby stables and trail riding outfits gaining hands on experience giving pony rides, trail rides, and taking care of the stable. She saved all her money and knowledge for the one day that she would have a horse of her own.

By the time Deanna turned 17 her dream came true, her parents said she could buy a horse and take it to college with her. Eager to find her life long equine partner she fell in love with a buckskin BLM mustang. She sought instruction from natural horsemanship training methods and within a few months had the mare gentled, halter broke, and being ridden bareback in the round pen, ready to go to college with her.

Deanna attended Feather River College in Quincy, California, majoring in Equine Studies. She worked with her horse, and other college horses, in the Equine Studies program for two years. While attaining her A.S. Degree in Horse Training she learned how to start, train, and sell western performance horses. She learned about a style of natural horsemanship that emphasized softness, patience, and understanding following techniques directly from horsemen such as Bill and Tom Dorrance, Ray Hunt, Pat Parelli, Brian Neubert, Buck Brannaman, and methods used by the Californio Vaqueros.

Deanna quickly excelled in her equine classes, and was a two time Cow Horse U Shootout Winner of 2007 and 2008, and FRC Reining Champion of 2008. She started and sold several horses for the annual Feather River College Production Sale, Snaffle Bit Futurity Select Sale, and Horse Expo Sale. After attaining her A.S. degree she worked for a year as a teachers assistant for the equine studies classes, developing her teaching style and continuing to ride and learn with horses.

Deanna transferred to University of California, Davis in 2009 to continue her education in animal behavior and equine studies. While still an undergraduate she took the initiative to become a teacher assistant for animal science classes, continuing to develop herself academically.

While at UC Davis she spent her time helping friends and acquaintances with their horses. Some of her friends rode quarter horses or arabs, and some friends rode gaited horses. She was introduced to the sport of Field Trailing, and was immediately hooked on the high adrenaline hunting hound sport, where you get to gallop gaited horses through pristine landscapes. After having success helping her friends with all types of horses, she decided to turn her teaching talent and equine passion into a business, and opened a small horse training and riding lesson entrepreneurship called Beals Horsemanship. To her the business was a way to continue sharing and learning about horses, and about the riders as well.

Deanna graduated UC Davis with a B.S. in Animal Science, emphasis Animal Behavior in 2012. She is currently a student at CSU Stanislaus, working on her M.S. in Communication in Biological Sciences.

To Deanna, her life has been dedicated to the horse and to learning. She is still learning, and devotes her time to continue learning. For Deanna, owning a horse training business has been a life long dream. She is excited to be able to have a career that is her passion. Her business reflects her pride in the profession, always providing top-notch, personalized, and productive services.
